Ever since his youth, Attorney Robert Gary Cummings has been highly competitive and focused on winning. He competed in many types of sports, including football, wrestling, karate, soccer, baseball, track, and tennis. He applied this same eagerness of success to his academic life and earned a scholarship to Arizona State University.
Achievements in Academics
During college, he made the Dean's List all four years. He was a member of The Gold Key Society, Mortar Board, Beta Gamma Sigma, and the Order of Omega. Furthermore, Robert became the recipient of many prestigious scholarships for achievements in academics, including the Arizona Legislative Research Scholarship, the Arizona State Regents General Scholarship, and the John F. Miller Scholarship.
He also became highly involved in public speaking, competing in Toastmasters International. He won the Arizona State University Humorous Speech Contest, then placed as a runner-up in the Southwestern Regional Toastmasters International Championships. He graduated from college magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting.
A Thirst for Success
Robert worked as a legislative intern with the Arizona State House of Representatives. While here, he gained experience with legal research and persuasive writing. While working as a certified public accountant afterward, he earned his Master's Degree in taxation and accounting from Golden Gate University. He went on to become a tax specialist as KMPG Peat Marwick LLP.
Pursuing a Legal Career
Robert attended University of California's Hastings College of Law where he focused his studies on criminal law. Here, he earned top marks in all criminal law classes and joined the heralded Moot Court Team, helping the team win national honors, including: "Best Brief" and place third in the August J. Rendigs National Moot Court Championship. While studying law, Robert also worked as clerk with the United States Attorney's Office Criminal and Tax Divisions. He went on to also conduct contested hearings as a certified clerk at the San Francisco District Attorney's Office and San Mateo County District Court Attorney’s Office.
After earning his law degree, Robert started work at the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office, handling a wide variety of complex criminal matters as a deputy district attorney, including white collar crimes, DUI, narcotics, domestic violence, homicide, and more. From here, he went on to work at the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office where he served on the family violence unit. While prosecuting with Santa Clara, he handled homicides, hate crimes, sex crimes, and other various criminal matters. With his experience as a prosecutor, public speaker, and trial lawyer, he is an invaluable resource to anyone who needs strong legal defense.
